Fooooood

So after my previous post, I thought I would write a slighlty more light-hearted one all about food. I wanted to write something for everyone and who doesn’t like food? I for one am a massive foodie and therefore am loving this part of my travelling experience. I am now heading into my final week in Tamarindo, Costa Rica and it’s safe to say that I have eaten extremely well while I have been here. Thank God I’ve been exercising regularly because there is a lot of delicious food here and so many CARBS. But it’s all pretty darn good, and mostly vegetarian (I’m not a veggie but would like to try to be one day) so in general it’s quite healthy.

The traditional food here is often some form of rice and beans (I may turn into a human size bean soon, no joke), maybe with salad, yuka (a vegetable that’s kinda like potato), some kind of meat dish in sauce (there are also veggie options), and plantain. For anyone that doesn’t know it, plantain is basically banana and for some reason it accompanies a lot of food in this part of the world. Personally, I cannot comprehend having banana as a side to a savoury meal… this may be an extremely unpopular opinion but I genuinely just can’t get my head around it, sorry. There is a lady who sells this type of food out of a car along the main street in Tamarindo (nicknamed ‘Car Lady’ by everyone at camp) for suuuuper cheap, so I would recommend paying her a visit if you ever happen to be in Tamarindo. (Pictured below)

Despite my confusion surrounding plantain, there was one instance where I enjoyed it; I had the most increeeeedible nachos made from plantain chips instead of regular tortilla chips. YUM. Plantain chips are the way to go, they’re such a good snack alternative, instead of buying potato chips or tortilla chips. These nachos were from a hostel called Selina which can be found in various locations across Costa Rica. (Pictured below)

The camp meals have also not disappointed with a new and exciting meal for dinner everydayyyy. There is always so much fresh fruit at breakfast and of course, rice and beans. Dinners are normally more varied, and I’ve had everything from tacos to spag bol (sometimes all you need is a bit of pasta – see below.)

We have also been making wraps at the beach a lot of the time and they have mainly been composed of refried beans, chickpeas, avocado, some form of salad, salsa and crushed up tortilla chips. They are AMAZING and you should all try making them.

So in general, food has played a big part in my trip thus far. I love trying new cuisines and have developed a new found love for refried beans. Food is life.

  1. Hi Billie. How do they clean the water for things like washing salad? Also have you had any weird meat dishes? X

  2. Hi dad 😂 the water here is drinking water! Think Costa Rica is meant to have good pure water ✌🏼 Some meat is questionable but all tastes good… think I’m going to try being a veggie for a bit though and see how it goes x
